A 26-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance in front of the office of a local immigration consultancy service, located just adjacent to the Mohali Police Headquarters at Phase I last evening.
Victim Sukhwant Singh’s relatives alleged that he (the victim) was upset as the management of Rudraksh Group (the immigration consultancy company) was not returning Rs 2.5 lakh, which it had taken from him around two years ago on pretext of sending him to Canada on work visa.
“The company neither sent Sukhwant to Canada, nor did they return the amount. After being harassed for more than one year, my nephew ended his life yesterday”, said Sampuran Singh, the uncle of the victim.
Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, the Station House Officer of the Phase I police station, confirmed the development and said that a case under Section 306 of the IPC had been registered against the management of the group at the police station today.
Sukhwant Singh, a resident of Chatha Gobindpura village at Sangrur, was working as a development officer of a private bank at Patran.
“He visited the company’s office yesterday at around 1 pm to get his money back. We kept trying to contact him several times but he did not pick up our call”, said Sampuran Singh.
However, the kin claimed that Sukhwant attended the phone of his colleague at around 2.45 pm and during the conversation, he started crying. “He said to his colleague that ‘mera pakka visa lag gya hai, main hamesha lyi jaa reha haan’ (I got permanent visa and was going forever). After that we could not contact him again”, claimed the uncle.
The relatives claimed that most probably Sukhwant had consumed the poisonous substance at around 4 pm but he was shifted to Max Hospital at 7.30 pm by some unidentified person. The police added that the doctors declared him brought dead at the hospital.
“Where was he between 4 pm and 7.30 pm (the time of his shifting to the hospital)? Who has shifted him to the hospital? His bag, containing some important documents and mobile phone were also found missing. There is something fishy”, alleged the kin of the victim.
Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that thorough investigation was on in the case. “We will check the CCTV footage of the office and the hospital also. The guilty, if any, will not be spared”, said the SSP.
Another person had threatened to end life in front of co office on Aug 19
On August 19, a person namely Sunil Bishnoi from Jodhpur, Rajasthan, had climbed the top floor of the company’s office and threatened to commit suicide by jumping from there. He alleged that the company was not paying his Rs 1.5 lakh, which he had paid to it for the Canadian Visa. After the police intervention, the amount in question was returned to him.
